As it became evident that her parents had to move to an independent living community, Terry began to examine the things in her parents’ lives, trying to coax them to let go. They had their flowerbeds and vegetable garden, the special tree, the best lawn in the neighborhood, and a very well cared for home of 52 years.
It was time to move but they were not easily convinced. When she and her sisters did finally convince them to move, they sat back and let the sisters handle the move, which in reality, was a very good thing. Letting go seemed to have a magical quality to it. Terry realized things became easier for them and in the end those things they had let go of seemed to return in a new way. In the House Series, she recreated scenes from their old house. Her boxes with the wrapped print box inside, came from the idea of packing them up, putting things in boxes that they couldn’t use in their new home. They were free as soon as they let go of them, thus the picture on the other side of the box had no wrapping. The theme is a universal one that all can identify with; being able to let go and move on when one must.
